Position: Staff Accountant

Location: Washington, DC

The Staff Account is responsible for applying well-established accounting principles, theories, concepts and practices to the accounting treatment of financial transactions.  Staff Accountant is responsible for providing analysis and advice regarding accounting programs and or financial management matters.  Supports a wide variety of accounting functions and works independently at an expert level with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform a wide range of activities in fixed asset management, specifically in the area of accountability, recording, reporting, and problem resolution
  • Perform complex account reconciliation and account analysis
  • Define problems, interpret and conduct comprehensive analysis which may include data trends, deviation from standards, forecasting, and cost-benefit analysis.
  • Review, record and report financial transactions in accordance with established accounting principles (GAAP) policies, and objectives
  • Develop nonstandard reports and statements
  • Prepare financial information for submittal
  • Implement and monitor policies and procedures in the assigned program area to ensure the achievement of management objectives
  • Assess, investigate and analyze unusual problems or complete projects in the absence of guidelines, policies and/or procedures
  • Interpret, analyze and develop accounting policies, standards, and procedures that facilitate increased accuracy of the activity costs
  • Review and authorize requisitions for posting in the financial system

Skills, Education, and Experience:

  • Bachelors in Accounting or Finance; Masters and CPA preferred
  • 4+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience
  • Working knowledge of automated financial systems; Lawson Financial preferred
  • Ability to work independently in a project-oriented environment
  • Strong analytical, planning and organizational skills
  • Expert knowledge of accounting/finance principles and GAAP
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Working knowledge of applicable software programs
